    The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

    Position Summary
    The Senior Investigator is a key member of Columbia University's Department of Public Safety, reporting directly to the Executive Director of Investigations. In this critical role, the incumbent will lead investigations into reported incidents and crimes across the University, ensuring a safe and secure environment for our diverse campus community. The Senior Investigator's expertise will directly support the University's commitment to upholding Title IX, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and Clery-related regulations.

    Responsibilities

  • As the department's lead investigator for Title IX and gender-based misconduct cases, the Senior Investigator will play a crucial role in fostering a culture of safety and accountability within the University.
  • Conduct thorough interviews and investigations, serving as the primary liaison between the Department of Public Safety, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
  • In certain cases, the Senior Investigator will refer matters to external agencies, such as the FBI, Secret Service, and NYPD, while maintaining close collaboration with the Sexual Violence Response Team to ensure comprehensive support for victims.
  • Deliver engaging informational sessions on topics such as sexual violence, gender misconduct, and workplace domestic violence to both administrative and uniformed staff, empowering the community through education.
  • Assist with victim and witness support services and, when necessary, represent the University in court appearances.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director of Investigations on confidential University-related investigations, contributing to the safety and integrity of the campus community.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience is required.
    • Candidates should have at least 3 to 5 years of investigative experience, ideally within a complex institutional organization. Familiarity with Title IX investigations and Clery Act reporting is strongly preferred.
    • Experience with interview and interrogation techniques is an advantage.
    • This role requires the ability to manage shifting priorities, handle multiple investigations simultaneously, work independently under deadlines, and engage with a diverse University community.
    • Strong customer service orientation, along with excellent communication, interpersonal, and administrative skills, is essential.
    • Proficient with current computer systems and able to utilize various electronic equipment, including CCTV, in the course of investigations.
    • Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills are required, and experience in executive protection is highly desirable.
    • Must be able to engage in strenuous physical activity, including walking, climbing stairs, carrying equipment and supplies, including boxes, and packages over 25 pounds, as well as standing or sitting for long periods of time.
    • Willing and able to perform duty in inclement weather conditions.
    • Since the Department of Public Safety is a 24 hour, 7 day a week operation, the Senior Investigator must also be able to perform duty on weekends, late evenings and early mornings as directed.
    • Must have a valid driver's license.
